28/4/2017

Delays at Yangshan, Shanghai port

Dear valued client,

Average delays for container vessels calling at Yangshan Port in Shanghai have increased by more than 40 percent since the beginning of April and the congestion is expected to last until mid-May. The average delay per vessel from 16 -18 April has increased by 42 percent to 53 hours compared to the week prior and a 41 percent increase compared with the first week of April.

Main factors that has contributed to the delays/congestion include

  • A large number of containers from Hanjin Shipping (carrier collapsed late last year) remain at Yangshan port taking space;
  • Service and terminal changes;
  • Capacity mismanagement among the major terminal operators at the port;
  • Dense fog

The Shanghai Port Authority are addressing the capacity issues by shifting some port calls from Yangshan to other terminals in the city.

As a result of the delays in Yangshan port have a knock on effecting on the following ports.
