BRi USA NEWS - More than half of the world's container ships arrived late in December

2/2/2021

Dear all Valued Customers

A growing number of container ships arrive late, show new data from Sea-Intelligence. In December, less than half of the ships arrived in ports on time. And there are no prospects of improvement before the second quarter, says the analyst firm.

More than one in two container ships arrived late in port in December, as schedule reliability in the container sector again plunged to a record low.

According to numbers from Sea-Intelligence, global schedule reliability dropped in December to 44.6 percent, down 31.7 percentage points compared to December 2019.

In other words, this means that schedule reliability hits a record-low level for the fifth consecutive month, writes the analyst firm. This happens at a time when the container market is red-hot and there are bottlenecks and a shortage of empty containers in numerous ports.

In recent months, there has also been an increase in how much the ships are late on average.

"We also see a similar trend with the average delay for LATE vessel arrivals, which has recorded consecutive M/M increases for the past four months, reaching 5.74days in December," writes Sea-Intelligence.

No prospect of improvement before the second quarter

Maersk-owned liner company Hamburg Süd was again in December the most reliable of the world's biggest container players, with a schedule reliability of 55.3 percent.

However, of the world's biggest container lines, only HMM and Zim experienced an improvement month-on-month in reliability in December, while none of the shipping lines improved their reliability compared to December 2019, writes Sea-Intelligence.

Here Maersk recorded the smallest, though not insignificant, setback of 27.5 percent.

In the short term, Sea-Intelligence sees no prospects of ships getting better at arriving on time.

"(...) shippers might not see improving schedule reliability until 2021-Q2," writes the firm.
